Excerpt from Tennessee History StoriesAt the time of the first settlements, much of the State was covered with thick forests. These were full of deer, bears, panthers, and other wild animals. Some parts were grassy plains over which vast herds of buffaloes roamed. In other places the land was covered with pea vines and wild flowers. Along the streams were dense growths of cane. Every kind of game was abundant. This had been the hunting ground of the Indians for untold ages.The Great Smokies are the most lofty mountains in Tennessee. On top of the Great Roan the air is cool in the hottest days of summer. Visitors at the hotel find comfort in roaring wood fires, while people in the val leys below are seeking shelter from the burning sun.Sometimes the tops of the mountains are called Cloud land.
